1. Introduction

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), an international, graduate-level Research University, announces the launch of its 5th Edition of the Research Competition open to undergraduates from around the world. This competitive research event is part of the university's Winter Enrichment Program, being held this year from January 10-21, 2016. 

Up to 50 authors of the high ranking abstracts will be invited to spend one week at KAUST between January 17-22 to present their research and to participate in an exciting international program. KAUST is dedicated to inspiring a new age of scientific achievement to benefit Saudi Arabia and beyond. The University is committed to advancing science and technology through transdisciplinary research of global significance. Situated on the shores of the Red Sea, there are many recreational and cultural activities to choose from during your visit, including local excursions, culinary delights, and marine activities.

 

2. Instructions for Registration:

 

Complete and submit the form below, the inclusion of an abstract is mandatory.

 

Please include the following in your abstract:

 
  • Context/background of the issue(s) researched
  • Aim of the research
  • Concise summary of the research design, methodology or analytical procedures used
  • Results/conclusions/products
  • Implications/significance to the relevant field

Abstracts should be between 200 and 300 words, single-spaced, with one or two figures (maximum). Font: Helvetica or Times New Roman, Font Size: 10 Abstracts are mandatory; figures are not. If you feel like sending us a figure or two, please send it to us via a zip file with your abstract. Acceptable formats: .doc, .docx, or pdf file or zip file with attached figures. Naming format of the abstract document: Institution_Last Name_First Name example: DUKE_Smith_Peter.doc/.docx/.pdf. KAUST is an English language university, only abstracts in English will be accepted. 

 

3. Guidelines

 

General Guidelines:

  • Participants must be undergraduate students. Students must submit individually.  Group submissions will not be accepted. Each student must be responsible to present their own research.
  • A research abstract should be submitted online -electronic submission only. See more details on instructions for registration.
  • The research abstract should fall within the general areas of focus at KAUST including (but not limited to): Advanced Membranes and Porous Materials, Catalysis, Clean Combustion, Computational Bioscience, Geometric Modeling and Scientific Visualization, Red Sea, Solar and Photovoltaics Energy, Water Desalination and Reuse, Desert Agriculture, Extreme Computing, Uncertainty Quantification, Numerical Modeling of Porous Media, Solid State Lighting, Energy Control at Nanoscale, Innovative Material for Energy Storage, Sensing, Nanotechnology.
  • Upong being selected to come to KAUST, students may present their research by poster or video.  All videos must be a maximum of three minutes.
 

PLEASE NOTE:

  • All travel to Saudi Arabia will be subject to a valid passport and visa stamp.  
  •  Please ensure you have a valid passport or ID with at least 6 months validity remaining in January 2016.
  •  If you have applied and been selected to come to KAUST in previous years for the undergraduate competition, you will not be eligible to apply again.  If you have applied and your application was not successful you are eligible to submit an abstract. 
  • When you submit your abstract your supervisor will receive an email asking to support your submission with a letter of recommendation.  Once your supervisor has provided his or her recommendation you will be prevented from editing your submission.
  • The criteria of judging will be based on overall impact, novelty of the work, clarity of ideas and creativity.  
  • Depending on the field of interest, the abstracts will be judged by specialized committees whose decisions are final. 
 

4.  Timeline:

  • November 15, 2015: Deadline for submission of abstracts.
  • December 1, 2015: Authors' names of the accepted abstracts will be published on this website
  • Official invitation will be sent to the top accepted abstract authors to visit KAUST in Saudi Arabia for a full week during the WEP period 17-22, January 2016. (Actual visit subject to visa issuance. The organizing committee will arrange for visas (for international participants), travel, and lodging.

Permission:

  • When submitting an abstract, authors testify that this is their original work. Presenter's name and electronic name is treated as an electronic signature.
  • Also, the participants agree that their abstract - and later on his/their posters or videos - may be featured in KAUST publications and/or included on the KAUST website.
